Our application process is open to all who are serving or have previously served in HM Armed Forces or the Emergency Services who have acquired a physical disability through illness or injury, whether or not it was related to their time in service.

At Hounds for Heroes, we’re here to support your independence and help you live life your way. Our specially trained assistance dogs are more than helpful companions, they’re capable partners who can make everyday tasks more manageable and life more fulfilling. With their support, you’ll have the confidence to face new challenges, enjoy greater freedom and take the next step forward.

What sort of conditions can Hounds for Heroes dogs help with?

Our dogs are partnered primarily on the basis of physical mobility needs not conditions. However, to some examples, we have placed dogs to help people with various conditions such as:

Acquired Brain Injury
Amputees
Arthritis
Chronic back/neck problems
Degenerative diseases that affect mobility
Ehler Danlos Syndrome
MND
Multiple Sclerosis
Muscular Dystrophy
Parkinson’s Disease
Spinal Cord Injuries

Can I apply if my injury or diagnosis is not service-attributable?

We accept applications from anyone whose disability or condition may have arisen during or after their service. This includes injuries from accidents, illnesses or medical conditions that develop after leaving service, or conditions that are not directly service-related. We believe that everyone who has served our country deserves the opportunity to benefit from a Hounds for Heroes assistance dog, regardless of when or how their disability or condition occurred.

How much will it cost me?

We can fund the entire cost of the dog for all of its working life, including all food and vet bills. However, if partners are able to assist with any of the costs involved this is greatly appreciated. We don’t believe receiving a dog should put any financial burden on the partner.

How long do I need to have served?

Length of service is not a barrier to qualifying for one of our dogs. Whether you served for a week or for decades, we recognise your commitment and believe you are eligible for a Hounds for Heroes assistance dog.
