If you're wondering how to get an assistance dog, you're not alone. Applying for an assistance dog is an important decision, and it's natural to have questions about eligibility, the application process and the support available through Hounds for Heroes.

Below, you'll find answers to some of the questions we're most commonly asked by serving and former members of HM Armed Forces and UK Emergency Services considering applying for one of our assistance dogs.

What conditions can Hounds for Heroes assistance dogs help with?

Our dogs are partnered primarily on the basis of physical mobility needs not conditions. However, to some examples, we have placed dogs to help people with various conditions such as:

  • Acquired Brain Injury
  • Amputees
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic back/neck problems
  • Degenerative diseases that affect mobility
  • Ehler Danlos Syndrome
  • MND
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Spinal Cord Injuries

Can I apply if my injury or diagnosis is not service-attributable?

Yes. We accept applications from people whose disability or condition is either service-related or non-service-related.

Can I apply if my disability occurred after I left the service?

Yes. We accept applications regardless of whether your disability occurred during or after your service, and there is no time limit for applying.

Can I apply on behalf of someone else?

It is possible to find out information on behalf of someone else, however, you cannot apply on behalf of someone else without their knowledge. Each enquiry is dealt with on an individual basis.

Can I apply if I'm still serving or working?

Yes, being employed will not prevent the placement of an assistance dog. You will need to seek prior permission from your employer to take a dog to work with you, and your work place environment must be suitable for an assistance dog. Suitability will be assessed on an individual basis.

How much will it cost me?

We can fund the entire cost of the dog for all of its working life, including all food and vet bills. However if partners are able to assist with any of the costs involved this is greatly appreciated. We don’t believe receiving a dog should put any financial burden on the partner, particularly one relying on a military or emergency services disabled pension.

Can I apply if I already have a dog?

Yes, but each situation will be assessed on an individual basis taking into account the number of dogs in the house in relation to the number of adults in the house. 

Can I apply if I have children?

Yes, however every family situation is different and applications will be assessed individually to ensure that the placement is successful.
