Christmas is a busy and exciting time… but it can bring a few extra risks for our four-legged friends. From festive foods to decorations, it’s worth knowing what to watch out for during the holidays.
Some Christmas treats can be harmful to dogs, including:
- Chocolate (especially dark and cooking chocolate)
- Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants: often found in mince pies, Christmas pudding and Christmas cake
- Alcohol and foods made with it
- Onions, garlic and leeks, commonly used in stuffing and gravy
- Fatty leftovers, turkey skin, sausages, pigs in blankets and bones
Decoration dangers:
- Tinsel, ribbons, wrapping paper and small decorations can be tempting to play with but may cause problems if swallowed.
- Candles and fairy lights can pose burn or electric shock risks if knocked or chewed.

Crowds & noise:
Busy homes and fireworks can be unsettling for dogs. A quiet space can help them feel more comfortable.
Festive plants:
Holly, mistletoe and poinsettias may look festive but can be harmful if chewed.
Here’s to a happy, relaxed and healthy Christmas for you and your dog.
